"What have you learned from audience feedback?"
Below are the answers to the questionnaire I distributed for the evaluation question.
After watching my music video, what are your initial thoughts about it?
"The way the angles were really made it more effective, for example when the bedroom door shut. Another example is when you were walking up the stairs and threw the clothes back down, that was very effective. I also liked that parts in the woods/ by the river where you were holding hands, cuddling etc. as this brought positive vibes to the audience and made us feel like we were sharing that moment with you two"
"It looked professional, and the choice of making it black and white really suited the video 'theme' and linked to your song choice well. The angles and effects were also very effective and suited the mood of the whole video, making it captivate the viewer, and I myself felt like I couldn't take my eyes off of it until the end. It was a lovely and creative video that I thoroughly enjoyed watching."
"Interesting piece, quite well shot and an interesting story and narrative is shown"
"The video flows really smoothly through each shot, and I like the black and white effect. Also the camera work in the woods area is good, well directed!"
Would you say that the music video fits with the tone of the song? And why?
"It was romantic but also showed bits of you arguing. This song was powerful and sort of gave me vibes of a love but sometimes that love would die, but sometimes it was full on out there when you were cuddling etc. It showed your relationship with the boy in the way you wanted it presented."
"The mood of the video suited the song very well. for example, I feel as though the choice of using black and white fitted the song well, and the little snapshots of the relationship between the male and female linked to the song very well, making it fit together like a story, and flow very effectively"
Would you say that the music video looked professional? And why?
"I thought it was excellent but no one is ever perfect. The way you set it out was amazing, the ideas you had etc. This isn't a bad thing don't worry as I think the video was amazing! I wouldn't have been able to do this in a million years."
"I thought it looked very realistic and had many effects within it that made it look professional however nothing is perfect, and I haven't seen the real music video to compare. (Even though I am aware that it is not meant to be the same as the original video) Overall very good though."
How professional would you say the magazine advert is? And why?
"I thought this cover was very professional and looks like something that a professional person would make."
"At first I thought it was a real magazine advert which is why I rated it so highly, however it is maybe slightly plain so at first I didn't know what it was."
"It looks very effective and makes you want to buy the album."
If you saw this advert in a magazine, would you stop to read it?
"The 'little gone life' part really stands out and looks good so it makes me want to see what it is actually about. The plain colour and writing is very effective and draws my eyes to it."
"I would be intrigued to find out what it was about, I would then probably search the song to listen to it and find out why it is so good and popular."
If you saw the album in a shop, would it catch your attention?
"Yes, I thought it looked very professional and modern, which would probably make me want to look at it further"
"Yes it would. This is because the writing is plain and stands out well which is drawing my attention to it, rather that it being crowded with words. I also like the colour scheme you have used, really draws my eyes to it."
Recently, there has been an increase in the sale of Vinyl Records. With this in mind, would you say that a vinyl edition of the album would be beneficial?"
"I think the theme of the music and display of the album, video and advert would go well with the sort of people who like vinyl records. Links to that sort of 'Indie' look."
"More people would want to buy it as it looks amazing"
"It would make it different to other albums out there and unique."
After seeing all three products, would you say that they fit together?
"There is a clear link between the colour themes and fonts, that keep the theme running throughout each product. for example the black and white and the logo."
"The colour links them all together, and also the album booklet has lyrics that link, all about love and being together wit someone and all of the times you have shared, which the video also does because it shows you and your boyfriend together sharing magical moments with each other."
With the answers to this questionnaire, I didn't get any comments that I could evaluate my work from as they were all positive!
I am happy with my products and the feedback I got from my target audience, and, looking at the feedback, I am confident that my target audience like my video, advert, and album booklet.
From audience feedback, I have learnt that my target audience like to be intrigued by adverts, rather than having all the information about the band or a single written infront of them, as they won't have anything to research.
Also, they like album covers to catch their attention and make them pick it up if they saw it in a shop, which they say mine does.

"What have you learned from audience feedback?"
Below is a link for a post I made last month after doing some audience research and asking for their opinions on my magazine advert at the time.
The feedback was mainly positive, with a few pieces of constructive criticism, suggesting that I should make the band's logo bigger and decrease the size of the QR Code.
Updated Magazine Advert
The feedback was extremely helpful because I was able to keep the magazine advert design how I like it, but also change it so my target audience also like it, which would make them more likely to stop and read my advert, and hopefully therefore they are more likely to buy the album.
From receiving the audience feedback, I was able to learn how to adapt my piece to meet the needs of my target audience, but also how to change my print products to make them more appealing to my audience.
However, if I were to design my print products again, I might make the writing larger or add more writing to my magazine advert in order to give my audience more information about the band, as this was something I became aware of through my audience feedback.

Vinyl Chart
On the 13th of April, the Official Chart Company announced that they are releasing a separate chart specifically for Vinyl Records.
"Sales of vinyl have grown five fold in the UK in the last five years"
"Figures show sales of vinyl albums are set to grow by another 70% this year."
"2014 witnessed vinyl LP sales reaching a 20-year high in the UK at 1.29 million, following seven years of unbroken growth, and now, new Official Charts Company data for the first quarter of 2015 reveals that this trend is continuing at pace, with vinyl album purchasing up yet again a staggering 69% versus the same period in 2014, and vinyl singles also up 23%."
“The chart will not only help us to better understand which artists and type of music are driving this resurgence, but will also help guide a new generation of younger, but emotionally engaged, fans as they contemplate the vinyl delights that await them.”
Alex Gaskarth, frontman of band All Time Low, midweek leaders on the official albums chart who are also on track to claim one of the biggest-selling vinyl records of the week, said: “What I love is there are different worlds of vinyl fans: there’s the audiophiles who swear by the sound of vinyl, the people who like owning it as a collector’s piece, and then groups like our fans who buy a vinyl of our record simply so they can hang it on their wall.”
This is great news for me because it shows that vinyl records aren't as niche as they used to be, and there is a higher possibility that my vinyl records will sell more because of this. Also, the chart will make vinyl records more accessible to people, so they can search for a record they like, and fans of the artist will want to get is as high up the chart as possible.

Experimenting With Contrasts
After looking at my video and the comments that my teacher left, I have made all of the changes that he recommended and have played around with the contrast of light in my clips.
Below are the before and after pictures:
I like how the clips stand out more now, and they look of higher quality because of the change in the light. I have changed the contrast for every clip in my video, and I will upload the new and updated video in my next post, alongside the old video with the un-contrasted clips, so you can see the difference.

Updated Magazine Advert
After taking into account the comments from the survey as part of my target audience research, I have updated my magazine advert:
I have made the stars and 'Rolling Stone Magazine' writing at the top a little bit smaller, and made the band's logo bigger so that it stands out more to people flicking through a magazine. I have still kept continuity with my other print products because the size of the font and the image are still the same proportions they are on the digipack, but they have just been adapted to stand out in a magazine.
I have made the QR code slightly smaller, so that your eyes are drawn to the logo first, but the code still catches your attention, which was suggested in my survey results.
I hope this makes my advert more appealing to my target audience, and will increase the chances that it will catch people's eye when flicking through a magazine.

Survey Results
As I wrote in my last post, I have distributed a survey to 40 people, and below are the results:
Question 1:
"This is a magazine advert for the album of my band. What are your initial thoughts about the design / layout?"
Here are some answers that I got:
"May I take this opportunity to congratulate you on a magnificent design and fabulous logo. It just epitomizes great artistic talent and even without vibrant colour, it would shine brightly among other covers."
"I like it how there is so little things on the cover that it emphasizes the words "little gone life" including the 'heartbeat lines'. I like how you have included a QR code in front of it, I think it is neither too small or too big. The black background does help the white text stand, however the small record at the bottom left of the cover looks like it might take time for other people to see it. Overall, I think it is a good front cover because it is a cover that has its own characteristics that you don't usually see at a magazine stand."
"I like the minimalism used as it makes me feel the need to find out more about the band, and I hope the black and white design reflects on the genre of music the band plays"
"The cover is quite simplistic but this makes the cover look more professional which is good."
"Simple, minimalistic, modern, quite cool."
Question 2:
I then asked them...
This shows that the majority of people asked had heard of the magazine, which proves that it is a mainly well-known magazine, which is why I used it for my advert.
Question 3:
"If you saw a QR code similar to the one above on a magazine advert, would you scan it to find out more?"
Even though 37% of people said they wouldn't scan the code, 34% of people (just 1 less person) said they would scan the code; it still shows that a lot of people would scan it.
I then asked the respondents why they chose the answer for the above question, and the most common reasons for saying they would or wouldn't scan the code are below:
"It would depend how interested I am in the artist(s)"
"I would visit the website shown on the advert rather than scanning the code"
"Yes, because it's an easy way to find out about things"
"It's an interactive way of seeing more and it's quick and easy to do."
Questions 4 and 5:
"On the magazine advert you first saw is the writing "vinyl edition coming soon". If you saw this advert, would you consider buying the vinyl edition?"
"Why did you choose the above answer?"
Again, even though only 16 people said they would buy the vinyl edition, and 24 people said they wouldn't, the answers show why:
"It would depend on the music, I would probably listen to it a bit first."
"Vinyl records are too expensive"
"I prefer to have digital music - it takes up less room"
"I would need to see the vinyl in shop first"
My results show that most people interested in vinyl records and music from the indie/rock genre would buy the vinyl edition of the album, and they would scan the QR code to find out more about the band if the advert was in a magazine and it caught their attention, which were the results I was hoping for.

Shooting Today
Just like yesterday's shoot, it well really well.
I had written down the clips that I needed and filmed them first, and then just played around with the camera and different angles to fit with different lyrics in the song.
The boys had really good ideas for angles too, so we experimented with different shots and suggestions that they gave.
I am shooting again with them on Monday, so I will post after the shoot with some stills from some of the shots.

Today's Shoot
Two actors I was going to use for a performance part of my video backed-out last minute on Tuesday night, so I wasn't able to film when I had planned.
However, I found 3 new guys to be in my video. Today, I filmed for an hour in the main hall, and got them to sing parts of the chorus of the song, which I am editing into my video.
They have agreed to film with me over lunch time tomorrow, and then in one of our free periods. Also, on Monday, one of the music teachers is giving me access to one of the little music rooms, so I can set it up like a recording studio with a microphone etc.
Here are some stills from my shoot today:

Magazine Advert Survey
I have written an online survey which I have distributed out, which asks people 6 questions about my magazine advert, including one about whether they would use the QR code on the advert or not.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GLCNW6F
Hopefully I will have a lot of responses by the end of the week, which is when I will publish my results onto my blog.

Performance Location Scouting
After I lost a lot of my footage, I, along with my teacher, decided that I would add some performance footage to piece my clips together.
I went location scouting around the campus, and found some locations where I think would be very effective for a performance.
I used one of my classmates as a 'model' to see what it will look like when I film for real.
I went location scouting around the campus, and found some locations where I think would be very effective for a performance.
I used one of my classmates as a 'model' to see what it will look like when I film for real.
I started with the main hall, where I tested out different angles and shots to see which ones I could use, and which would look good alongside the others clips in my video.
I love this angle, and might use it for a shot or two.
I took this shot from a chair in the hall, and I like the angle; it looks as if he's being filmed by someone in the audience of a gig, which I think I will use.
These last 3 shots are something that I have used throughout my clips, and shows the contrast between a white and black background, and I think they would even better in black and white. When I do this for real, I will consider covering the walls with either white or black paper or card, if the room I took these photos in are busy.
There is another location where I will shoot a performance clip but haven't taken pictures of, are the music rooms. There is a small 'studio' type room in which I can film, and I will have access to a microphone and a microphone stand, which will make it look even more professional.
I will update this post when I have someone to be the lead singer, and I will take pictures from the shoot to add to my blog.

Explanation of iMovie Problems
As I said in my previous posts, I have had some serious problems with iMovie over the past week.
When I was trying to render my video to upload it onto my blog on Friday night, iMovie crashed and wouldn't let me fully access my video until the following Thursday. I notified my teacher, who I kept updated about the problems.
After finally being able to open the video, I realized that all of my footage and editing from the previous week or so had been wiped.
I have all of the editing and footage from the last rough cut I uploaded, plus a few extra bits I had made adjustments to. The things I am missing, however, is all of the footage I had filmed after this, including around 20/25 seconds of short clips which I had pieced together for the instrumental section of the song.
I have talked to my teacher about what to do now, and we have agreed that I will upload onto my blog tonight what is left of my video, and we will come up with an action plan afterwards.
I will keep updating my blog with what we decide to do next, and what we decide after my teacher sees the video I upload tonight.

Updated Magazine Advert
After reading the comment left by my teacher, I have added the information about a vinyl edition of the album onto the advert (see below).
CD Spine Research
Below is some research I have done into the spine on CDs. The common features I found on nearly all of the spines are:
I put the logo for the record label in the top left hand corner because I wanted to space out the writing and images on the spine, so it made sense to have it in the corner.
I placed the name of the band in the center of the spine so it will catch people's attention when they're browsing. Also, it is a self-titled album, so 'Little Gone Life' is the name of the band but also the name of the album, but I didn't want to write it twice as I want the spine to look as simple as possible, which is why I kept the writing to the minimum.
The third and last thing on my CD spine is the catalogue number, which is on every CD spine. I used the font that I have used throughout my CD booklet and print products to keep continuity.
I have added this to my digipack design (see below).
- Band Name
- Album Title
- Catalogue Number
- Record Label Name / Logo

iMovie Update
iMovie has just allowed me to access my files again, but I have lost all of my editing from the other week when I last had access to it.
I will work over the next few days to get the editing finished, but I may have to film some little bits as I think some of my footage has disappeared aswell.
But I will keep my blog updated with where I am by the weekend.

iMovie Problems
Whilst I was editing my footage on Friday night, iMovie crashed and it hasn't let me use it since.
I am still trying to fix it and hopefully it will be working soon, but I will keep my blog updated.

Music Video Update
As the deadline for the music video is on Friday, I thought I would update my blog with where I am on the editing side of things.
I still have a few shots I need to film, which I will have to do on Thursday night as it is the only night my actor is free, and so I should hopefully get the rest of the footage filmed in one night.
Which just leaves my editing. I am tidying up the editing on the footage I have so far, but I will also have to edit the footage I get filmed on Thursday night.
So, if things go to planned, I should hopefully have my final video finished and uploaded on either Friday night or Saturday, but I will make a post on Thursday/Friday with where I am up to.

CD Case / Digipack Template
After the design of my album booklet, I found a template online for the actual booklet which will go inside of the CD case. I have edited the template so I can see what it would look like:
For the 'inside right', I have made the CD black, which will fit with the theme of the rest of the CD cover. The logo is on the CD as it is on the other three pages, so, again, I added this to keep the continuity, but also because I took inspiration from Arctic Monkeys' 'AM' CD (see below). The logo on the CD makes it instantly recognizable, and this is what I want for my CD.
The front and back cover are the same as on my previous posts, and these will appear in the album booklet, which will be on the inside left.
For the inside left of my CD case, is a 'French fry box' style pocket. This is black and with only the band's logo on the front. Inside of this pocket will be the album booklet (see previous post). This is an original idea, and I haven't seen any other CDs with this design on it, so it will make my CD unique and intriguing, making people more likely to purchase the actual CD, rather than the digital version.
I have thought about designing a spine for my CD case, and I will make a post soon with some research into what goes on a CD spine, and a design for a spine for my CD case.

Vinyl Sleeve Research
Below is a Prezi Presentation for research I have done on Vinyl Sleeves.
I looked at the vinyl sleeves for Arctic Monkeys, The Neighbourhood, and The XX, and have also added my designs for the vinyl sleeves of my band, Little Gone Life.
I chose these 3 bands because their designs were simple yet recognisable to the audience, and they link to their other print products and music videos, keeping the continuity throughout their media; they all inspired the design of my vinyl sleeve in some way.

Final Magazine Advert
The design I have chosen is below:
I chose this over the other options because all 15 people I asked preferred this design.
I think the design fits perfectly with the album cover and the album booklet I designed for the band. I put the Rolling Stone rating at the top of the page because it's eye catching and will draw people's eyes to the name of the band beneath it. I put the text in slightly larger font so that it would stand out that little bit more, whilst not being too overpowering.
I spaced out the text and images on my advert because it adds to the minimalist style I was going for with the design, but also because it has a similar design to the front and back cover of the album.
I made sure the band's logo was the same size as it is on the album cover as to keep the consistency, whilst making it look intriguing as it's just that little bit smaller than the rest of the content on the advert.
The lack of information about the band and the release of the album was intentional, as it is more interesting and memorable. I put just the date on the album because it will get people talking, and hopefully make them excited to see what will happen on that date.
The QR code is placed directly underneath the release date so that it will be the next thing they see/read. The link will take people to a special page on the band's website where they can hear a short clip of the band's single 'Sweater Weather', and possibly the chance to download a free song by the band that won't be on the album. My teacher pointed out that it wouldn't work on an advert which is colour, but, as mine is in black and white, it fits with the theme and the minimalist design.
In the left hand corner is the 'Divinyl Records' logo, which is the band's management/record label. Every advert I researched featured this, so I had to incorporate it into my advert. I made the logo small but big enough to see, and it appears on all of my print products, so it will be easily recognisable.
Again, every advert I looked at as part of my research had a website address on their album advert, so I added one on mine. Just like the logo, I made the font small but large enough to read, which again fits with the minimalist design. The website address will attract people to find out more about the band, and is just the band's name, so it will make people remember the band's name more easily.

Magazine Advert Designs
I have made a few magazine adverts using Photoshop that I am going to analyse. I couldn't decide between the four designs which one I prefer, so hopefully this will help.
I like how plain and simple the design is for all of the adverts, as they're similar to the album cover and I wanted to keep the continuity throughout the print products.
The logo is the first thing your eyes are drawn to on each of them, so it makes it stand out more if someone is flicking through a magazine. The simple design and lack of information intrigues the audience and will hopefully draw them to look at the band's website, which will tell them more about what the advert is about.
I put the band's website in the bottom right hand corner, because this is what people will see when flicking through the magazine, and will catch their eye and intrigue them to stop on the page.
I chose the Rolling Stone Magazine for the rating because it is the magazine most likely to advertise the album because of the genres it covers.
I chose the 'Brit 2015 Critics Choice Award' for the top of my advert because it is a well respected award to win.
The album covers I researched in a previous post all featured singles from the album that reached number one or similar, so that was the main reason for putting it on my advert.
The QR Code inside of the album booklet would take fans to a page on their website with a video of the band thanking them for buying their album and possibly a competition to meet the band, which may make people more likely to buy the album.
Here are some examples of when QR codes have been used in adverts.

Also, it is a well established magazine, and people know it by name without the logo being there, so I thought it fit perfectly with the style I am going for with my album. Moreover, people who listen to the indie/rock genre respect the Rolling Stones' decisions and ratings, so this will hopefully make it more likely that people will listen to it because of this.
I chose the 'Brit 2015 Critics Choice Award' for the top of my advert because it is a well respected award to win.
The nominees are artists who are expected to be big in the upcoming year, so for my band to say they have won it is a big deal, and will hopefully give them more publicity.
The album covers I researched in a previous post all featured singles from the album that reached number one or similar, so that was the main reason for putting it on my advert.
Another reason was that a number one single is a big achievement for an artist, especially for a small band just starting out, so it will be appealing to people who haven't heard the song yet, or fans of the song who don't know about the band's album.
As a last minute idea, I really want a QR Code on the bottom of the advert, and possibly one inside of the album booklet.

The one on the advert would take people to a special page on the band's website, where a short clip of the band's single 'Sweater Weather' would play, hopefully attracting more people to the band, or even a free song that isn't on the album, which may make people more likely to listen to or buy the album.

Rough Cut Feedback
After reading through the feedback left on my rough cut video, I am going to aim to get another rough cut done by the weekend, depending on if I get enough footage filmed this week or not.
I am hoping to film the scene with at the end of the video with the couple playing with sparklers, and a few other clips here and there so I can speed up the editing.
I will post the new rough cut towards the end of this week.
