Planning The Evaluation

I have started to think about what I will say for the evaluation, and how I can use my blog posts to support what I am saying.

Experimenting With Contrasts

After looking at my video and the comments that my teacher left, I have made all of the changes that he recommended and have played around with the contrast of light in my clips.

I like how the clips stand out more now, and they look of higher quality because of the change in the light. I have changed the contrast for every clip in my video, and I will upload the new and updated video in my next post, alongside the old video with the un-contrasted clips, so you can see the difference.

Updated Magazine Advert

After taking into account the comments from the survey as part of my target audience research, I have updated my magazine advert:


I have made the stars and 'Rolling Stone Magazine' writing at the top a little bit smaller, and made the band's logo bigger so that it stands out more to people flicking through a magazine. I have still kept continuity with my other print products because the size of the font and the image are still the same proportions they are on the digipack, but they have just been adapted to stand out in a magazine.

I have made the QR code slightly smaller, so that your eyes are drawn to the logo first, but the code still catches your attention, which was suggested in my survey results.

I hope this makes my advert more appealing to my target audience, and will increase the chances that it will catch people's eye when flicking through a magazine.

Survey Results

As I wrote in my last post, I have distributed a survey to 40 people, and below are the results:


Question 1:
"This is a magazine advert for the album of my band. What are your initial thoughts about the design / layout?"
 
Here are some answers that I got:

"May I take this opportunity to congratulate you on a magnificent design and fabulous logo. It just epitomizes great artistic talent and even without vibrant colour, it would shine brightly among other covers."

"I like it how there is so little things on the cover that it emphasizes the words "little gone life" including the 'heartbeat lines'. I like how you have included a QR code in front of it, I think it is neither too small or too big. The black background does help the white text stand, however the small record at the bottom left of the cover looks like it might take time for other people to see it. Overall, I think it is a good front cover because it is a cover that has its own characteristics that you don't usually see at a magazine stand."

"I like the minimalism used as it makes me feel the need to find out more about the band, and I hope the black and white design reflects on the genre of music the band plays"

"The cover is quite simplistic but this makes the cover look more professional which is good."
"Simple, minimalistic, modern, quite cool."


Question 2:
I then asked them...
This shows that the majority of people asked had heard of the magazine, which proves that it is a mainly well-known magazine, which is why I used it for my advert.


Question 3:
"If you saw a QR code similar to the one above on a magazine advert, would you scan it to find out more?"
Even though 37% of people said they wouldn't scan the code, 34% of people (just 1 less person) said they would scan the code; it still shows that a lot of people would scan it.

I then asked the respondents why they chose the answer for the above question, and the most common reasons for saying they would or wouldn't scan the code are below:
"It would depend how interested I am in the artist(s)"
"I would visit the website shown on the advert rather than scanning the code"
"Yes, because it's an easy way to find out about things"
"It's an interactive way of seeing more and it's quick and easy to do."


Questions 4 and 5:
"On the magazine advert you first saw is the writing "vinyl edition coming soon". If you saw this advert, would you consider buying the vinyl edition?"
"Why did you choose the above answer?"

Again, even though only 16 people said they would buy the vinyl edition, and 24 people said they wouldn't, the answers show why:

"It would depend on the music, I would probably listen to it a bit first."
"Vinyl records are too expensive"
"I prefer to have digital music - it takes up less room"
"I would need to see the vinyl in shop first"


My results show that most people interested in vinyl records and music from the indie/rock genre would buy the vinyl edition of the album, and they would scan the QR code to find out more about the band if the advert was in a magazine and it caught their attention, which were the results I was hoping for.

Rough Cut

After another hour of filming this morning, I have been able to upload a full rough cut.
I will ask for opinions from others and record them, which I will be able to use as part of my evaluation, but it will also help me get opinions from people in my target audience.

Shooting Today

Just like yesterday's shoot, it well really well.
I had written down the clips that I needed and filmed them first, and then just played around with the camera and different angles to fit with different lyrics in the song.

The boys had really good ideas for angles too, so we experimented with different shots and suggestions that they gave.

I am shooting again with them on Monday, so I will post after the shoot with some stills from some of the shots.

Today's Shoot

Two actors I was going to use for a performance part of my video backed-out last minute on Tuesday night, so I wasn't able to film when I had planned.

However, I found 3 new guys to be in my video. Today, I filmed for an hour in the main hall, and got them to sing parts of the chorus of the song, which I am editing into my video.

They have agreed to film with me over lunch time tomorrow, and then in one of our free periods. Also, on Monday, one of the music teachers is giving me access to one of the little music rooms, so I can set it up like a recording studio with a microphone etc.

Magazine Advert Survey

I have written an online survey which I have distributed out, which asks people 6 questions about my magazine advert, including one about whether they would use the QR code on the advert or not.
